Refrigerated Trailers - Recent Price Trend

Prices for refrigerated trailers have been increasing at an estimated annualized rate of 1.1% during the three years to 2018. Price growth is largely the result of demand steadily growing during the period, although drastic increases in input costs have underscored price growth as well. Overall, however, the low risk of price shifts has preserved buyer power and allowed buyers to take their time.

Refrigerated Trailers - Total Cost of Ownership

There are several additional costs associated with reefer trailers that total more than 100% of the benchmark price, thereby indicating that the total cost of ownership is high. Costs are somewhat mitigated, though, by the high resale value a trailer retains over its life span, which often averages eight years. Reefers depreciate at a moderate pace, making purchasing used reefer trailers very.

About this Report

This report is intended to assist buyers of new and used refrigerated trailers. Refrigerated trailers, commonly referred to as reefer trailers, are trailers attached to semi trucks that transport temperature-sensitive cargo. Reefer trailers maintain a constant temperature because of an attached refrigeration system. Buyers include foodservice operators, trucking service providers, medical facilities and emergency response and disaster planning operations, among others. This report excludes reefer systems, single-body refrigerated trucks, rental trailers, trailers not intended for commercial use, insulated trailers and oil tank trailers.
