Crude oil and fuel prices dip in 2024 while volatility persists

  • Coming off an 8-month run of oil production cuts from OPEC+ countries, select countries announced a continuation and additional cuts in production until the end of 2024. Production cuts will help keep oil prices elevated throughout the year.
  • Ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel and general unrest in the Middle East is causing uncertainty surrounding oil prices has been leading to volatility in prices. In the fourth week of December 2024, crude oil prices hit $70.27 per barrel, but volatility remains as geopolitical concerns remain.
  • Following steep declines in the last quarter of 2023, natural gas prices rallied in 2024 as the United States faced high demand, topping out at $3.13/MMBtu in mid-June. Prices have since increased further following forecasts for colder-than-usual temperatures in the United States, rising to $3.38/MMBtu in the fourth week of December 2024.
  • Gas prices have been extremely unstable in 2024 due to events such as OPEC+ announcing oil production cuts leading to a price rally and producers increasing production rates applying downward pressure on prices, followed by subsequent declines as demand for oil from China wanes. However, while geopolitical tensions fuel instability crude oil prices, weakening demand from China has been driving down gasoline prices, hitting a national average of $3.03 per gallon in the fourth week of December 2024.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Antifreeze

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Antifreeze market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Delays may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

Shipping costs should be carefully researched because there could be substantial hidden costs associated with shipping. Buyers should consider the distance of the manufacturers since remote operators will increase transportation costs and extend lead times.

Customization

Buyers who purchase in bulk can reduce the total cost of ownership since buying antifreeze in drums, as opposed to smaller plastic containers, reduces the amount of packaging and materials necessary. Metal drums can also be refilled an infinite amount of times, reducing some costs for the buyers.

Billed During

Maintenance

The antifreeze available on the market today is designed to last up to 150,000 miles, and certain cars can last up to 10 years without needing a replacement. However, periodic checkups may be required to ensure that the coolant has essential corrosion inhibitors and is still usable, which will likely increase the total cost of ownership for buyers if not offered for free.

Disposal

To ensure proper disposal and avoid environmental remediation costs, buyers may need to undergo more time-consuming or costly procedures to recycle antifreeze that add to the total cost of ownership.

Unforeseen

Delays

Shipment delays due to logistical issues can result in costs in the form of lost profit for buyers or engine repair costs.

Spoilage

Defective antifreeze can lead to engine corrosion, which could significantly add to the TCO for buyers. However, proper maintenance and an extensive selection process can reduce the risk of this unforeseen cost.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

The average market vendor has low financial risk. Most suppliers provide various other goods and services, such as oil, gas, and chemicals, that improve the company's profits and have stable demand trends, decreasing the risk of supplier discontinuity.

The top four antifreeze suppliers account for approximately 45.0% of the total market revenue, indicating high market share concentration. Vendors with high brand name recognition; like Valvoline, Prestone (Honeywell), and Castrol (BP); occupy relatively significant shares.

Supply chain risk is high in the antifreeze market. Natural gas and crude oil refineries and inorganic and organic chemical manufacturers pose the greatest upstream threat to market suppliers. In addition, plans to build a new factory in Louisiana that would produce 2.4 million tons per year of ethylene were shut down by a Louisiana state judge for pollution-related issues, a bad sign for the future supply of antifreeze inputs.

The United States is a net exporter of antifreeze, which means buyers benefit from a consistent availability of domestic antifreeze. As a result, buyers benefit from both greater domestic availability and the ability to seek foreign supply options if they wish to do so.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Antifreeze Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Customer Complaints and Customer Retention Rate. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Quality and other factors.

KPILevel of Importance (1-5)MeasurementsKey Considerations
Customer Complaints

Number of customer responses

Number of customer complaints

Customer complaints represent customers’ overall complaints/dissatisfaction with a company or product.

A high number of customer complaints for a company's product will require more research before procurement. Buyers should inquire with vendors about specific complaints to avoid similar issues.

Customer Retention Rate

Number of customers at start of period

Number of customers added within period

The customer retention rate represents the number of customers a company is able to retain over a set timeframe.

The customer retention rate can be used to determine the extent to which a company’s customer base fluctuates over time.
