Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Ice & Snow Surface Treatments

Total cost of ownership is High in the Ice & Snow Surface Treatments market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

Ice melt treatments can be expensive to transport and ship; buyers can cut down on transportation and shipping costs by selecting a local supplier.

Billed During

Storage

Buyers must ensure that treatment products are isolated from moisture and water when not in use because this may deplete the product; buyers may have to invest in additional goods such as airtight storage to ensure market products do not lose their effectiveness during storage. Moreover, many buyers purchase an entire season’s worth of treatment products, so they must have a place to store large shipments.

Hardware

Buyers need to purchase a method to distribute the surface treatment product such as a deicing sprayer; a sprayer that holds 100 gallons of solutions averages around $2,700. To distribute salts, many buyers will also need to purchase special trucks or modify pickup trucks with an add-on that can spread salt on roadways.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

A moderate level of vendor risk does not have a significant impact on buyer power. Although supplier bankruptcy could disrupt supply and lead to the loss of any capital invested in a contract, the overall risk in this market is not high.

Medium supply chain risk does not have a major impact on buyer. Although shortages or fluctuations in the price of input goods could it difficult for buyers to procure products in a timely or cost-effective manner, the risk in this market is limited.

Low market share concentration benefits buyer power because it encourages price-based competition and moderates price growth.

Before its invasion of Ukraine, Russia was a key exporter of potash and urea, chemicals used for ice and snow treatment among other purposes. As a result, strained trade relations with Russia have increased the cost of these chemicals and elevated supply chain risk in this market.

The United States is a net importer of ice and snow surface treatments, meaning it imports more ice and snow surface treatments than it imports. While the availability of imports offers buyers opportunities for cost savings, buyers should take into account lead times, quality control, currency risk and trade policies.
